I rode the rest of the way in silence. I leaned against Kylo as he wrapped his arms around me and played with the strands of my hair. He calmed me down, which helped me sleep most of the way. We drove for eight hours before we made it to our destination.

“I told you guys no one was going to like where I had in mind,” Carter says as he examines our faces. “No one should find us here. It’s secluded.”

Kylo helps me out of the truck, stepping out first and holding my arm as I find my bearings. We’re surrounded by tall trees in the middle of another freezing-cold forest.

“I have camping gear in the bed of the truck. Let’s set up camp, and then I’ll find somewhere for us to eat.” Carter fills the silent air.

I wrap my arms around my body and try to keep warm, but it’s no use. The four of us set up the tents and start a fire with the wood that Zeke collected. I sit close to the flames and rub my hands together. Kylo comes to my rescue and wraps his arms around me, keeping me warm in his tight embrace.

“We’re not too far from a store and a few hole-in-the-wall restaurants. We should grab something to eat and buy warmer clothes,” Carter suggests.

“What about our campsite?” I ask.

We just set up, and now he wants to leave?

Zeke looks at me. “I’ll watch over your stuff. I have warm clothes and some food packed,” he says.

My insides ache for him. Abel was killed, and Marco betrayed him. We’re all he has left.

“We’ll be back in a few hours,” Carter tells Zeke as the three of us walk to the store.
